I was looking through the junk tray at my LCS this morning and found a very worn copper coin near the bottom. At first I thought it was an English 18th-century halfpenny token, but then I noticed the shield and what looked like E PLURIBUS UNUM... I bought it and eight other coins including a 1979D SBA dollar for £3 (about $4). I've identified it using the Red Book as a New Jersey copper. The side with the date is very worn, but appears to be struck a bit off-center, and I think I can make out a 7 under the exergue, making it 1787. I wonder if any US Forum Member can offer a more precise identification, please? Would this grade as P01 details? Thanks!

Amazing pick-up for 50 cents! The shield is nicely visible and enough of the plow's handles are there to perhaps narrow things down a little. I'd grade it a Awful-0.5.

@NR, here is my current thinking:
1. The right corner on the shield points to (and is nearly touching) the right-hand upright of the letter you in UNUM. I only see one variety with this (Maris c). There are five varieties known with this rev.
2. The width of both plow handles is roughly equivalent to the spacing between them and all three of these distances are on the thick side. If you rotated your obv pic about 5-10° clockwise, I think that you would have a match for Maris 42.
My best guess is that you have a Maris 42-c (Bowers W-5210), but I am very interested to hear what the more knowledgeable folks say.

Yep that looks better to me, but I'm hoping that @NH collector, @germanicvs, @westcoin, @vermontensium, etc. will provide a more definitive analysis.

It is not a 42, the plow handles are below the N, on 42 the upper handle points to the N. New Jerseys are usually pretty easy to ID but this one is going to be tough.

I was looking at reverse c as well, but looking further I don't think it is. The stops before and after Unum are farther away on reverse c than this coin. I think the looks of the positioning of the corner of the shield is thrown off by the condition of the coin. Sorry, so far I can only say what I don't think it is!

I believe it is a reverse m as in 55-m. Tall point of shield, Second you higher than N. M slightly skewed to the right

While the reverse sorta matches reverse m, the obverse does not match the obverse 55.

Every time I think I have it figured out, something just doesn't look right. I guess the corrosion is throwing the details off enough to make it tough.
