I collect world coins. I am looking for a full list of countries, territories and dead countries. The Krause list for 1600-today exists, but none organized correctly before that. Is there such a list?
I have over 500 coins from different places, with a list of over 1300 places. Many probably didn't have coins, but couldn't rule them out yet. Anyone?

No clue how complete that list is, but it's a start.

You can also check out

But again, it is not complete and there are a lot of grey areas. Some aspects to consider:

- Minor kingdoms and tributary or quasi-independent kingdoms (See German States or Indian Princely States)
- Rebel states or rogue states
- Micronations that issue currency, but exist only ironically (Sealand, Hutt River)

Thank You Finn. My list shows kingdoms and states. Are the Micronations real currency or just produced for display? I will look at the lists.

Think of coins from Austro-Hungarian empire or Ottoman Empire.

Go out to Yahoo! groups and join "Every Country" - there is a list of, well, every country, which is used for the OFEC collectors.

OFEC has a list for each government, which is a broader definition.

Thus there are, for example for Germany, separate listings for the Weimar republic and the 3rd Reich.

How far back would you wish to go?

Consider ancient Greek city-states, each one of which can be considered a "separate country". There were thousands of them, scattered across the Mediterranean region and beyond, and many of them issued coins. This Wildwinds index page is by no means comprehensive and lists over a thousand of the more commonly encountered city-states, kingdoms, tribes and empires in the ancient world.

"Micronations" are defined as entities which claim to be independent countries, but which have no international recognition as such, nor do they effectively control the territory they claim. This is distinct from an "unrecognized state", which also has no international recognition of their independence, but which does in fact exercise some degree of control over their claimed territory. Both micronations and unrecognized states issue coinage for sale to collectors and tourists; only unrecognized states issue coinage for circulation.

Examples: Sealand and Hutt River are micronations. Transnistria and Somaliland are unrecognized states.

Most don't consider Micronation coins to be "real" because by definition, Micronations aren't recognized as "real" countries. I think Seborga is about the closest thing to a true Micronation currency, in that I think they circulate to a limited extent within the city. Might be the same with Hutt River. Sealand is a pirate radio station in a WWII sea bunker, so there is no economy for their coins to fuel. The guy in charge of Molossia accepts his coins in the "royal restaurant" where he will grill you a hamburger in his back yard.

I would strongly recommend setting some parameters for your collection; even an OFEC set for the post-WWII world is a challenge to complete.
