Hello again, Once again I think I have found a counterfeit 8 Reales and wanted to share/get the forums opinion on this example. While cleaned and chopmarked, this 1800-Mo 8 Reales has a TH assay mark...and as far as I can see, only an FM assay mark should exist. Like the other counterfeit 1802 I found recently, this coin weighs perfectly, is the correct size, has the correct edge and this 1800 example's surfaces look very legit...no pitting or casting issues. I would be very happy to be proven wrong...but think it is counterfeit. Seems like the TH assay is a widely used reverse die for counterfeits.

TH didn't start until 1803. To me, the second 0 looks suspicious.

Underlying coin likely genuine - that second "0" was altered from something else.

Interesting! So, What, maybe like an 1806-MO TH that has been reworked to be 1800. Interesting. The second zero does indeed look altered.

Probably more like the digit was removed altogether (smooth), and then... that "0" reconstituted in its place.

Interesting, you may be right. Thanks for your help. I'll get it under some magnification tonight.

I took a few photos with magnification and I think you are 100% correct! The date has been altered. Take a look at the image below...the second 0 has clearly been ground-off and a new (rather amateur) zero was put back on. You can even still see the scrape marks in the inside of the second 0 as well as the tool mark in the field next to where they tried to add the serif. Thanks again for all the help - this turned out to be more interesting than a simple fake...wonder why someone would try and alter this date...

I think the coin was found pierced in the fourth numeral position, then the hole was repaired by a jeweler and it is easier to form a zero than a six ... could it be? Take a photo of the reverse side at the "0" position.

Interesting thought. Taking a look (the '0' in question is opposite the dot to the left and including some of the R in Rex), it doesn't look like other repaired holes I have seen, but then again, the reverse in that area is heavily warn and scratched...could be signs of grinding off any signs repair. Either way, interesting :)

It was probably repaired a long time ago and the jeweler did a good job ... but of course he was not a numismatic An interesting coin in any case, made me remember another one (Philippines Peso) that I posted in ccf ..... sometimes it is easy to see the repair but other times not so much. http://goccf.com/t/269368&SearchTer...,philippines
