Okay so I've been coin collecting for a long time. Cherry picking for a long time too, but this one has got me stumped. I figure that the reverse is lamination or Struck Through Grease but the obverse? Check out that date! It's friggin' giant! The only thing I can figure is die chips? Thoughts?

Seems strange that the date is only effected. Plus it's 'raised' as high as other lettering it's just more...fat, for the lack of a better word. I would assume that the MM would be effected more and that Lincoln's lapel would show some deformation.

Just noticed what appears to be an s MM east of bust and far north of date. Its late for me. I'll inspect it tomorrow morning to see if it's just highly convincing PMD. If it's not then-woah. I'll report the details then.

I'm guessing the reverse was ground down by the ground in someway with all the damage it shows. I'm more trying to figure out the date... it has to be from the 1930's... 1937? I can't figure another date that would make sense for the 1's digit.

Edit: Nope, changing my mind... 1957, the serif in the 5 matches much better than a 3.

Looks like all PMD to me: scratches on the rev and preferential flattening of the date, mintmark, and rim from two to three o'clock on the obv.

Thank you all for the smelling salts. I knew this was a possibility, but high hopes proved my bias. Needed some objective voices from the community to make me see what I already thought I saw. The 's' I saw was PMD by the way. Oh well, I do feel it's unique enough to throw into my 'obscurities box'...which seems to be growing exponentially

Keeping it for educational purposes will lend it credit that it would not otherwise deserve. Plus, it was a neat "puzzle".

The whole coin is PSD. And yes the date was flattened probably with a hunk of metal and a hammer .

Thoughts on the date? 1937 perhaps?

it's PSD, been smashed. Looks like a 1950 something, or 1930 something. The last number has been sheared, no telling what it was due to wear.

Great idea! Although I think I'll post it as a 1997-D.

hmmm...interesting find. I think it's dated 1999 or 1997. It has been smashed so badly, but why only the date? Everything else looks great.
