I'm kind of new to figuring out what is an error and what isn't, but I'm getting the general gist of it. Double die, double strike, blank planchet, clipped planchet, off center, variations and other mistakes, but I'm unsure if you'll ever see a mint error which looks like this. Given the bad condition that the reverse is in and the perfect condition the obverse is in, I'm wondering if this is a mint error or not. If not, will I ever see a coin which is damaged in this similar manner which is an error?

PSD. The flattened areas on the rim tells me it was altered in circulation. Nothing in the minting process could have created that during a normal strike. Appears intentional.

Figured as much but figured I'd give it an ask just to confirm. So probably if a coin is beaten up in any way, probably not a mint error?
Rest in Peace

Road Rash is what to call that, found in parking lot.
To answer your question, yes, 99.99% of the time it will be environmental or Little Johnnie in his Garage(intentional) damaging a coin. Mint errors follow patterns and are know by their examples.

@skasher, first welcome to CCF. Second, if you hang around CCF for a little while, you will most likely see a whole variety of mint errors. For US coins, I recommend looking at some recent threads from this specific forum within CCF: http://goccf.com/f/5

This can be a quick and effective way to learn from some experts in the field (as I have).

I think it looks like a severely damaged coin.

As the others have said this is a "parking lot" coin.

Sure, take an error coin, put it in a parking lot and let some heavy trucks run over it and it will look like this too, but still be an error coin. But there is nothing that could happen in the minting or planchet production that would create a coin that would look like that.
