I found this penny today and I have never seen this before. I was wondering if someone could tell me if it is an error or just something someone did to the coin?

@btd, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @john1 that this is most likely damage caused by someone after the coin was struck--a file, sandpaper, or a dremel most likely.

We recently had a Jefferson nickel thread where someone took a dremel to Monticello. Maybe someone out there doesn't like historic buildings?
