If this isn't a contender, than nothing else I have is!    This has not been attributed, but I believe it is an Indian punchmarked coin in copper or copper alloy. I am not sure about how many punches there are, but I figure eight at most on both sides or as few as six. I will leave the scoring to Spence.  I think you've seen these pics before. Very good @spruett. It is a little worn, but I see five stamps on the front and one on the back, so your point total for this copper coin is 7.

I'm tempted to post an Olbia dolphin and claim it for 2 points, but that would be cheating. (Besides, it would probably actually count for 3 or 4 points, and I doubt I could argue for not having missing design elements, either.) Olbia dolphins aside, the lowest-scoring coin I have is probably this little cast bronze from 9th century AD Byzantine Cherson...   Michael III and Basil I, civic issue of Cherson under Byzantine rule, circa 867 AD. Sear Byzantine 1499, Esty Cherson E7. Reverse: Πo X ( Polis Cherson, i.e. City of Cherson) Obverse: MB ( Michael and Basil) Points: reverse 3, obverse 2, copper 1, total 6 Squares are 5 mm, which makes the coin about 14x12 mm (give or take a bit). I don't recall the weight at the moment. I apologize for the low photo quality; making a photo even this good of a small dark coin with very high relief (it barely feels like a coin in hand) on a smartphone camera was rather tricky. |

I'm pretty sure that I said I'd give folks until late on Friday to submit entrants, so we are now less than 23 hours from a winner. @j1m, I'd like you to please post your dolphin as it will force me to think about the rules that I developed for this challenge. That plus we don't see those guys very often on CCF.

Might as well, I guess... (The photos suck, though.)   Olbia, dolphin shaped AE, 30x9 mm. Apparently SNG BMC 360; cf. Numista 170810. Probably circa 5th century BC. I can't tell from the photos whether it's one of the types with the eye. I think the dorsal spine only shows on the right-facing side. The one that got away: the seller that I got it from in June 2013 also had one of the (rarer) inscribed types. I passed on that, as it was over my budget (not by much - IIRC the price was around $50, i.e. about 2-3 times what I paid for this one). Never seen one of those again. I did buy several other neat coins that day, though they didn't have particularly few features...   (I, alas, no longer recall whether I bought the IHC on the same day as the others, but it was not particularly expensive either. It currently resides in my 7070 album.) |

Special thanks to @j1m for posting that AE dolphin. It looks like it might be worn enough as to not qualify for this round, but I honestly hadn't considered non-circular coins for this round. Even after we have been playing this game for so long, I'm still having to think more broadly about what is a coin.
