I've actually considered buying gold coins several times; at all of those times since 2011, it was a question of "either blow my entire budget, or at least the majority of it, on a single gold coin, or just buy a few dozen regular coins for the same money, preferably spread out over several weeks or months", and ultimately I always chose the latter.

The one time that this wasn't the case, and which I still feel sad about, was in October 2010; the coin was really tiny, and would have cost me about $35 at exchange rates of the time, which was about 30% of my budget for that day (that I ultimately ended up spending about 5% of).
...Not that I have any idea what it was - I didn't remember enough of the details. In retrospect, the Numista search results suggest a mini replica along the lines of this, which might well have been more of a disappointment than if I didn't get it, so there's that, I guess?
