I think this is the best I can do. 1891 25 pennia from Finland. edit: misread the challenge as a coin with a sword, not someone holding a sword. Does a lion holding a sword count? if not, I have something else.

For the record I love this challenge! I know I wouldn't get high on the points with the dragonslayer but any chance I can get to show that coin off I would....
but I am LOVING the coins I'm seeing here! Some REALLY cool material.. kudos to all participants!

Looks like this is the oldest one I can offer... Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth Jan Casimir 1666 Copper Solidus Basically the only reason I have it is that it's not even worth the effort to sell! I also thought that I would have an ancient to show off for fun, but now that I think of it, ancent coins usually show spears, not swords! Which makes me wonder... what *is* the first sword on a coin?

My guess would be something from the late 1400's. That time period is when large silver coins became more prevalent, allowing for more elaborate imagery.

Well, folks, it has been three days and it looks like no more entries are coming in, so it is time to declare a winner. There was outstanding participation this round: eleven solid entries spanning 400 years- ! Y'all did good. And even though I would *love* to award the prize to pepactonius because I have never seen one of those coins that several posted, in such high grade, Spence wins fair and square by being the first with 1512. Congrats! Now let's see what *outrageous* challenge we all are in for next!

Good job @Spence! I bet we're going to see some nice obscure medieval coin next...

I loved this round... course I love this thread... this is the BEST thread this forum has had in my opinon! Why there isn't 50 members here contributing yet I have no idea!
But now I wait for the next challenge....
It was my birthday a lil while ago and I bought a coin just for this thread... that's how much I am loving this thread!

Woo-hoo! After sitting on the sidelines for several rounds at the start, it's nice to participate in and then win one of these. I'm gonna take about 24 hours to think about which coin to post and how to formulate the awarded points.

Congrats Spence! If anyone is wondering, the solidus I posted was sent to me by Spence back in February for becoming a CCF Supporter. I have been a Supporter ever since and suggest that for everyone who is not to consider what the gains of membership are versus the very low cost of being a CCF Supporter. By the way, it's still my oldest dated coin.
