Like most of the other coins in my collection I bought this one off of ebay. I think a little over a decade ago. It's the only really old dated gold coin that I have and my favorite part about it is that if you look at the coin closely you will see bits of a white encrusting substance, which are actually bits of dead coral. The photos only really show it in the letters next to the arrows. So, this coin is most likely a shipwreck coin but I have no idea from which shipwreck and if not a shipwreck coin it has at the very least spent a very long time in shallow tropical saltwater since it takes a very long time for coral to even try to grow on gold. My holland ducat is from 1608, so neither of these would win. Perhaps I'll post a later Lithuanian half-groat in better condition, or something else with a sword. |

It looks like my oldest coin with a sword is from the 1400s, but that one does not have a date on it. So I guess I will just re-post the type of coin Coopertron already posted.  |
