With the site back up and running, I can post my challenge. Hopefully it is better received than my last couple. As so many of us have been, I've also been thinking about the COVID-19 coronavirus quite a bit lately. While it is too early to predict the long term effects of this current pandemic, most if not all of us have been impacted by some way and I certainly don't want to minimize this. Historically, there are several previous flare-ups of the plague which caused stark shifts in the course of humankind. According to John Firth in his 2012 paper titled "The History of Plague - Part 1. The Three Great Pandemics", these were: 1. The Justinian Plague of 541-544 AD 2. The Black Death of 1347 - 1352 AD 3. The third pandemic of 1894 - 1959 AD This challenge is to post a coin from as many of these three time periods as possible. Here are the deets: 1. You get one point for posting a coin from a specific period, up to a maximum of three (if you post one from each time period). 2. Posting multiple coins from one period doesn't provide extra points. 3. As you know, dating of Medieval and Dark Ages coins is a bit of an art, so try your best to get the dates to match up. The date range for your coin must overlap by at least one year of 541-544, 1347-1352, or 1894-1959. However, the date range shouldn't extend more than 25 years beyond the pandemic range. My Ostrogoth coin below was minted between 542 and 545 AD so it overlaps with the Justinian Plague, but only extends beyond the range by 1 year. On the other hand, I have a Khwarezmid Drachm which was minted between 525 and 575 AD that would not be worth a point since the coin's date range is broader than the plague's date range by more than 25 years (i.e. 575 - 544 = 31 years). 4. If the exact date that a coin was minted is known, then this year must fall within the ranges above to be worth a point. Partial years are acceptable for AH dated coins. 5. Highest number of points wins, with ties going to whoever posted first. For those interested in learning more about the history and impact of these plagues, here is a link to Firth's paper: https://jmvh.org/article/the-histor...f%20society.

Spence, they reason you challenges often receive minimal participation may be because they are often directed at one area of collecting, For example your last challenge pretty much required a token to score high. For this one you can only score 1 point if you don't have any coins that aren't at least medieval and the date ranges on the older ones (3& 5) years mean a collector would most likely have to own quite a few of them to have a chance of having a coin that would count.

Quote: they are often directed at one area of collecting Yep I get that, but I was thinking that I've varied the specific area of collecting enough that if folks don't get a hit on one then they would get a hit on the next one. In the process, they might be inspired to broaden their area of collecting. But maybe not... I do see what you are saying about this specific one having a super-narrow range of participation. Shall I just scrap it now and come up with something else?

It's an interesting concept and I don't mind waiting for entries, I just thought you might like some input.

Ok yes. I just sifted back through almost six months worth of pages of this thread to find my last five challenges.
Mintmarks and mint errors (n=5 participants) Matching characteristics of a token (n=8) Smallest silver (n=8) Size and weight combo (n=7) Matching characteristics of a world coin (n=6)
Let's give it a day and I'll re-assess whether to ditch this latest idea or not tomorrow.

Again I can only do era 3, as my collection is 1 x coin of 400BC 4 x Roman copper coins of 4th century (My Constans II follis may match with the Kyrenia earthquake of 364AD?) 1636 to now. How about this modification, add a few more epidemics like 1. 1834 Cholera Epidemic in the UK 2. 1918 Global Influenza Epidemic 3. 1948/49 Poliomyelitis outbreak Either of 3 coins could count as my entry.
