I've just started my coin collection and have been purchasing RAM-issued coins that come in a package/case. Is it best for me to just leave them in their packaging? My collection becomes disorderly if I do this and I'm sorely tempted to yank them out and order them in a folder.
Also what kind of environmental conditions should I store my coins? Out of sunlight? Cool temp? etc.

I know of a collector that takes all the coins out of the packaging, puts them in 2x2s and then in an album for display. I do the same for the open to air pre-1984 mint sets as the material used is damaging to coins.
However in this age of packyboxitis, sometimes the packaging is worth more than the coin, so for resale more money will be acquired with the coin in the packaging.
Yes you are correct about the conditions. Cool and dry preserves the best.
Caution rant to follow.... I'm getting really tired of trying to preserve cardboard and plastic. Where I am in the tropics it's a real pain as everything goes moldy in summer. In any case I thought I was a coin collector, not a cardboard collector. Because of this I tend to take colonial and predecimal coins more seriously. Gold sovs really don't care about the weather Lol.
There, I feel better now.

Perhaps this may not apply to Australia, but I'll add this thought on 2x2s. If you store coins in 2x2s long-term, be sure the plastic window does not contain PVC. I think mylar is preferable. I say this because I've noticed many ruined coins in dealer's inventory because they were stored for years in bad 2x2s.

I'm pretty sure Lighthouse brand use mylar. And yes PVC is destructive to coins.

I do a lot of what learjet says about pulling the coins out of the packaging and putting them in 2x2s in an album for display. Pretty much everything except proofs. I am a COIN collector and no amount of argument is going to convince me the packaging adds to the value of the coin. So again agree with learjet.
However I don't sell any coins, and as a lot of people seem to want the packaging, if you intend to sell in the future, keep the packaging somewhere safe. You can then put the coins back if you need to. Don't think this will work for mint set coins though, as I have always totally destroyed the packaging getting them out.
Oh and welcome to the forum.

I'm really glad to hear that so many of you are taking the coin out of the packaging. I take all mine out, even the PNC's. As everyone has said, I am a coin collector.
I find it amazing that a coin might sell for more in one kind of packaging over another. I think the long term value of any coin is the actual coin. Quality quality quality is the key long term...even in the new NCLT stuff that is coming out.
The coin dealer that I buy all the new stuff that comes out laughs at me as I go through 50 - 100 of every new coin that comes out with my loupe. If you look closely you will be amazed at how many little dings are in those coins. If you look at enough of them, you will find one that is just that little bit better. That is where the value is down the road I believe.
I do keep the packaging, but not because I may put the coin back later...I just see no reason to throw them away at the present time.

Spedward, I have a little Numis album also. I'm not sure if the pages have PVC or not. However as long as the coin is in a protective 2x2 and then placed in the album it should be safe. As long as the coin doesn't come in direct contact with PVC it should be alright.

I didn't notice. What happens then? Do I turn into a pumpkin? Yes I notice a lot of dings on those RAM UNC coins. So hard to get a GEM. Of course when buying online you don't get to see what they are like in a mint set either. Uh oh. Image: PUMPKIN.jpg71.36 KB

G'day, quote "I do keep the packaging, but not because I may put the coin back later...I just see no reason to throw them away at the present time." - Barry Humphries did a wonderful monologue about this phenomenon, in his capacity as "Sandy Stone" - I'm sure you'll empathize.
Quote: "I am a coin collector. I find it amazing that a coin might sell for more in one kind of packaging over another." - I'm a coin collector too. I can't understand why anyone bothers with NCLT: if it doesn't circulate, then it's not money, and therefore lacks the essential quality of a coin. Peter

Thank you for making those of us who collect NCLT feel so very good about our collections!

Of course NCLT coins are "money". I can understand why someone wouldn't want to collect them, but I can also understand why someone would.
They are legal tender, and you can take them to the bank and they will give you face value for them, just like all other legal tender. Just because they don't circulate, doesn't mean they can't. And to prove that I have a friend that has found two $1 NCLT coins over the years in circulation.
Roman coins are very collectable, and they certainly are not legal tender or money of any kind. That's the beauty of collecting coins...you get to make up your own rules.

Hey Peter, does that mean you don't collect any uncirculated coins, because they haven't circulated, therefore not money? But seriously, as far as NCLT goes, if I like a piece I will buy, but I don't go out of my way. WAY, WAY, WAY too much NCLT comes out these days. I at least like to think I am going to be able to complete my collection one day. (Though hopefully never)
