This is not an African Head. Very clearly not. Multiple, very obvious issues that show it is not. I have explained to the dealer twice how I can easily spot it is not one. They reply they have examined it and it is an African Head.

No it is not. Why get defensive about it?

Clearly not an African head. Probably going by the RedBook and don't realize how many different varieties there actually are!

Why be defensive? Because " I did the research that I think is necessary NOT you!! Na, na, na na na!!"

Maybe the dealer bought it as an African Head and doesn't want to take the $ loss because it isn't.
(I don't know ANYTHING about those coins; my thought is just a WAG.)

Variety identification requires the books and the time. Some dealers simply don't take the time to determine the truth. The same for the bidders who bid without their own research.

These dealers are worth watching. I've bought scarce mint marked coins listed with no indication of a MM, proofs that were listed as business strikes, and a few good old overdates not listed as such.

I'd have to agree, after looking at an African Head the coin in the ebay sale definitely isn't one. Doesn't match obv 4.1 or 4.2 So then the question becomes so what is it? I don't do these so I don't know.

It looks to me to be a 5-F.5, I think it is about an R4. Actually quite a bit rarer than an African Head but not as much in demand.

This particular seller has sold a large volume of early copper in the last year, presumably purchased via an estate sale or some other means, as he does not appear to be a collector himself. Some of the prices have been ridiculous, others ludicrous, and a few that are "merely" high. I have seen a few coins with attractive pricing but buying colonials and early copper on photos alone is a risky endeavor.
