How can I differentiate SMS dimes 65, 66, and 67 from BU business strikes? I don't know which I have but they are uncirculated. I bought these in a group some years ago.

I don't know that there really is a surefire way to tell the difference. SMS coins are proof-like but some business strike coins can be too.
For my personal collection I cracked open sets and that way I know for sure.

Outside of the OGP, it may be difficult. I believe that the best business strikes can look better than the worst SMS.

I've been wondering about this as well concerning nickels. I bought a '65 & '67 raw and when examining them, they are not PL and could just be very nice BU coins. The only reason I have faith they are SMS is because I bought them from JT Stanton.

If they are nice BU coins they are most probably SMS.

You can find the SMS sets for around $10-$12, I picked up one of each and I did like NJBob and just cracked them open for the Dansco Albums... I didn't have the heart to break open the ones I had, because I bought them in the late 1960's, when I first started collecting coins.

spruett001, How about sending an eMail to Stanton and ask him to explain in detail how to tell the difference? If he does, post it here on CCF. John1

Can't be done with certainty except for high end SMS. A high end business strike can't be told from a lower end SMS. Even the TPG's can't do it. They have slabbed coins taken from bank rolls as SMS, and coins taken from special mint sets as business strikes.

Another question, would you group your SMS dimes with proofs or business strikes? Technically these are not proofs but for the sake of proof continuity it might make sense. Thoughts?

Put them with the proofs, because they were minted with proof dies. John1

Quote: How about sending an eMail to Stanton and ask him to explain in detail how to tell the difference? If he does, post it here on CCF. I did message JT. This was my question: Quote: In your experience, are there any definitive ways to tell an SMS nickel from an exceptional BU nickel? I'm not doubting what I bought, it's just a general question to learn more.
While not detailed, this was his answer: Quote: Thanks for your kind note. We do care about the coins we ship. -- For the most part, the SMS coins have a glossier finish than a nice circulation strike BU. That's definitely true for the 1966 and 1967 SMS coins. However, some nice 1965 coins can somewhat closely resemble a 1965 SMS, yet an experienced eye can tell the difference. There are several 1965-1967 circulation strike coins that are tougher to locate and slightly more expensive than the SMS coins of the same date. To tell the difference, the SMS coins are glossier, and generally have a much sharper strike. Also, FYI and contrary to what most people believe, ALL SMS coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint. Most people believe they were struck at Philadelphia, including many dealers! I hope that I've helped. Feel free to drop a note at any time. Thanks - JT It didn't really tell me much but, there it is.
