I had purchased a lot of coins (specifically wheat pennies) and I came across this one in the box. Before I tossed it in the junk pile I wanted to confirm with you guys that it is definitely PMD. Lincolns profile (particularly his face looks very flat. There are some lines going in the same direction that look like someone sanded it down. On the reverse the lines are more evident on "One Cent" and "United States of America". It's kind of sad because this coin has a really nice luster to it. All opinions are greatly appreciated!

It could be weakly struck or struck on an underweight planchet. Can you get the weight? The lines I am seeing look more like die polish lines rather than PMD.

Weight the coin. There are also polishing lines.

Unfortunately I don't own a scale that could be precise enough for this coin sorry. Does anyone know of a good scale that I could buy online?

So how much under 3.11 grams would it have to be in order for it to be considered underweight? Does anyone have any other pictures of polishing lines on pennies? Would it really cause Lincolns face to be so flat?

Does the die polishing add any value to the coin?

No, unless it's severe causing the device (Letters or other design detail) to be completely polished off, remove the whole detail on the coin.

Quote: Does the die polishing add any value to the coin? Actually on your coin the die polishing would take away from the quality of the coin.

Quote:Here's a sale on ebay for you. Don't waste your money getting a scale for this Wheat cent - it is just a common coin that was struck from an over polished die - save your money for something you really want and will use more than once!

Yeah that makes sense Mark because his ear is almost worn off and it doesn't look very nice. I'll probably keep it just as a good example of die polishing

I'm not going to go out of my way to buy a scale for this cent but I am going to keep my eye out for one anyway because I should have one. Thanks for the advice everyone !
