Two proof Morgan dollars, each graded and photographed by PCGS, so hopefully we are comparing apples to apples here and it's not just that one was photographed better than the other:

Morgan-Dollars---Which-Would-You-Rather-Own

Morgan-Dollars---Which-Would-You-Rather-Own

The first one is mine and was graded PR63.

The second one is one I recently saw for sale and was graded PR65.

I know that, technically, the second coin is a superior specimen and it has a book value for something like $2000 more than the first one, but there's just no way I would ever swap, even if it it didn't cost me any more money.

So... what about you? Is eye appeal more important that grade and value? Or would you rather have a higher graded, more valuable example?

Based on the pics, I'd say yours looks better for a proof. The 1892 looks to have some kind of haze or something in the toning that deminishes it's look for me.

Me too. What is the picture hiding that kept yours from getting a higher grade? The picture seems like it should grade higher than a 63...

An alternate picture of my coin is available at the PCGS site at the following location:

There are some milk spots and some faint scratches here and there. I am not a professional grader, so I'm not exactly sure what the grader saw.

The '03 all day long.

I'm not a Morgan guy, but the gash on the cheek of the '92, and the dull toning just makes that (IMO) an ugly coin.

This has me wondering;

A) could it be the photos, where the '92 isn't bringing out some spectacular toning like we see in the '03, and are there marks on the '03 being concealed by the lighting?

B) (and this falls into a conspiracy theory type thing) Could the submitter of the '92 be a 'big' customer of the TPG, whether a company or individual, that could possibly sway the grade? I hope to Hades that wouldn't ever be the case, but I've been wondering.

In answer to the question of eye-appeal vs rarity/value, it will depend upon the individual's goals. I will grab a coin if it's a steal, even if I'm not actively collecting them or whether I like it, but if I can flip it for a decent profit, then I'll buy it. But I typically don't go out looking for such coins, I go looking for what I want/need, and if something comes along, then I'll make that call at that time.

Since grading is not a science - there is no guarantee the assigned numbers are correct anyway.
Here we have a case of "professional" pictures of "professionally graded" copins and there is still, immediately questions about just how accurate the work of the "professionals" is (pictures or grading) in this case.

If these coins were broken out and sent back in for grading again, there is no guarantee they would get the same grade.

Therefore, once again the wisdom of "buy the coin, not the slab," comes into play. The assigned number means nothing except both are great coins.

Therefore I would choose the one with the most eye appeal to me and not even consider the number on the label. To me I prefer the looks of the first one.

The 1903 looks extremely good for a 63. There is not one major mark, the toning is great, and the luster is strong.

I honestly think it could get a gold CAC bean.

I'd rather own the first, if it was a choice of those two. It's an awful lot prettier.

I'm not very interested in slabbed classic US coins, however (though the "proof" thing makes it somewhat less ridiculous).
I'd rather get an ancient gold or a tetradrachm or something if I had that kind of money.

That's the secure plus scan from part of that process. Those are almost always atrocious and switching to the TrueViews for the public picture was a decision everyone was very happy about
