I've noticed that a large percentage of low to mid grade 3 Cent pieces, relative to their mintage (and use?), have varying degrees of verdigris. Finding nice, uncleaned examples is difficult at best. Prethen has his work cut out for him. My grading skills lack somewhat in this area, so any help would be apprecaited.

The 1866 I'd grade G-4 from the photos provided. The 1872 looks as though it should go EF-40-45. It appears to have some pretty significant wear on the III, though the beads on the tiara are sharp until you get near the top, then they, too, show wear. Is there some discoloration on the back? It seems mottled and inconsistent, though the difference in the surfaces are subtle.

The 1866 is a G/VG and the 1872 is XF/AU. Both appear to have been cleaned. The surfaces don't appear original in the pictures. However, the 1872 might be okay depending on how it looks in hand.

Now, you know my pain CC. That's why I rejoice when I find a lowly, common 1865 that looks cool for the grade.
