I've actually purchased about a dozen "black book" CSC over the years (on purpose). They are all so easily distinguished that a simple comparison of the real thing will quickly point out how sloppy they are.
It's nuts, in my opinion, not to decide on PCGS or NGC or a combination of the two for your set. Not only do you avoid 99.999% of the potential problem of buying a counterfeit, but they are instant cash, regardless of where the market might be.
Additionally, depending on your finances, it often makes much more sense to step up a grade or two.
As an example, if you compare the Spanish Trail in 65 versus 66 it's insane not to get the 66 for the small price difference.
Be especially cautious of examining each coin in great detail against others in the "same" grade. Unlike many coins that look very similar in a specific grade, there are much wider price differences between the same CSC in the same grade.
Tab toning is presently loved by many. Beautiful toning is also high value. Bright white (no, that doesn't mean cleaned) also hits high. But even more important is where the marks are as far as location is concerned.
Right now I'm high bidder with Heritage with 15 days left on a CSC I need and it's already well over the average price for that issue. I'm willing to pay much more than average price because it is a drool baby.
Caution. You might only want to buy one coin a month!
