The Trade dollar was demonetized in 1876, so a 1878 Trade did not heavily circulate. The wear could be explained by the coin being a pocket piece.

I don't think I have ever seen a Trade dollar with this much wear. I also don't think cleaned or uncleaned makes a difference. Has rims so good 4/6
