MS details scratched. Shame as it is otherwise very nice with a clean cheek. This being the most common of dates, why acquire such a problem coin?

Love the toning on the coin, is the scratch on the holder?

It's a strike through. If you tilt it on the side it looks like square root symbol. It's in a ms holder, it's not details. There was probably a bit of metal that got stuck and was struck through hence the weird looking mark on the cheek. Most scratches are not like this, hence my assumption it's a strike through error, same opinion came from coin197 from whom I got it from.

Looks like it was an intentional scratch, rather than accidental. Graffiti seems more likely than strike through foreign matter. In any event it is a problem coin.

Or it's not; ANACS wasn't making many mistakes back in that original generation of holder which said "Official ANA Grade."

Whatever it is, I'd just leave it be.

I will get more opinions down the line. Frog I like all my Morgan's in PCGS holders, on occasion I will buy NGC if I like it. I really believe this coin is undergraded by 2 points at minimum. The cheek is mark free minus the strike through mark by the nose. I will bring it to my dealer next time I see him and see what his opinion is. The question is do I play the safe gamble and try crossover or do I crack it out and send it in raw. Decisions decisions.

Even if it is a mint strike through and ANACS was right, it is still a problem that there is a scar running down the length of Liberty's face. I don't know that this feature makes the coin any more attractive. If I had this in a straight graded holder, I would not crack it out to try to "upgrade" it.

I'd leave it as is. I enjoy having a few of the old small ANACS holders. They've always sold for good prices when I've parted with one.

My grade is MS 63 PL, possibly DMPL (you can't really tell from pictures) -- struck through wire obverse, scarce for such, and exceptionally scarce in a small ANA slab. The toning is very attractive. Cracking this coin out would be highly detrimental to its value, regardless of the fact that I think NGC or PCGS would give it 64 PL/DMPL all day long.

Aside from the struck-through area, the cheek looks extremely clean. And with it being an error, I would think to take that mark out of consideration when determining the grade, meaning I would think MS-65. And either PL or DMPL—I cannot tell which from those pictures (or really any pictures).

With that scratch I just don't see this getting anything other than a details grade, unless they see it as a struck through fiber.
