It looks like a 1 punched into a polished cent

after a closer look it appears to be hand done counter punch Machine Doubling.

Btw, is there any noticeable doubling in the 8's?

These are cool...I have a few of them...not sure of their origin...

but I've seen this done on a NFLD large cent in the same exact spot as well (front of queen's neck)...

hopefully one day someone will solve this mystery

I've heard in the past these were used by church groups during functions for coat checks.
They would get them all back or you would give up their coat ( It did sound plausible to me ).

Here are mine (I might have a few more)..the 50 cent silver NFLD piece kind of argues against the coat check theory...
