I was looking at a pair of 1874 Straits Settlements 1 Cent Coins today - one of them is 1874 and one is 1874H. the 1874 is (correctly as far as I can tell) in the medal Orientation but the Heaton variety is in the coin orientation - I can't find any info as to if this is normal so thought I would ask here.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but *This* is exactly what I've been wondering about for a long time. All sources I could find do not seem to mention whether it is normal for 1874 dated Heaton cents to be in coin orientation. Mine also seems to be in coin, not medal like rest of the series. Any Straits collectors there to solve this mystery?

Like you my references make no mention of the coin alignment. The numista entry only shows medal alignment.

There is a book which might answer your question.

Coins and Coinages of the Straits Settlements and British Malaya 1786 to 1951

I dont have a copy and Amazon advertises it at around the £170 mark. Maybe a local library can help?

Wow, I had forgotten about this old post of mine,

Pridmore makes no mention of the different orientation of these.
