Wondering if this is just staining or an actual "woody" ? Got it out of my LCS 15$ bin, I asked him if he's sure he only wanted 15$ and he said "yes - just trying to get rid of old inventory". So I wasn't going to ask twice. Sorry about the pics - a bit more obvious in hand.

Mark, looks like a cleaning that is showing the underside of the removed gunk. Don't know about woodies in LC's, the alloy mixes weren't changedil 1864.

Look what "el cheepo's" doin', getting tired of editing most posts! glad computer should be out of shop soon, college kids brought all their crap so a bit behind...

Appears to be on the surface, rather than in the metal. So no, I don't believe that's a woodie.

Large cents are hard to resist for $15.

So you like the "millennial" song? Just a funny but realistic song.

I'd dunk it in acetone for the sole reason of seeing what happens. Won't hurt it and it may clean off. If not it's probably a toning effect from gunk that was there and removed (like the others said). Look at it with a powerful loop (x30) and see if it looks like the metal or on surface.

My gut says it's not a woodie. I would lean more toward what others have said about old gunk being removed and the leftover uneven toning. Or, possibly, something foreign remaining on the surface.

I wouldn't either for that one!

Mark,.....I have no, many words for that exceptionally prophetic video. Unfortunately for the past 20 years us baby boomers have had to put up with some losers of ourpeers as President, I'm really, really glad I won't have to witness MILLENIAL PRESIDENT(S)!

Now I have to go change my sweats, I laughed so hard I had a Chris Matthew's "warm feeling down my leg" moment!

Don't be so sure.

I'm a Millennial (by most standards) and in 10 years will be the same age as our youngest President.

I'm 65 , not in best of shape and only have half of my brains left, in ten years, I won't care, sitting in a wheel chair drooling on myself, ain't growing up fun!

Either that or they'll have thrown me off the cliff by then, isn't that what the "they" are claiming is going to happen?

I'm not going to swear it's not a woodie. I've seen alloy issues in Braided Hair Large Cents. Since you only paid $15 and it's already been cleaned, you could clean the dickens out of it and investigate further. I'd never recommend cleaning coins, unless it's in the name of science.......which this could be.
