I noticed an anomaly on a 1996 proof eagle that I was about to sell on ebay. I believe that I have correctly attributed this to be caused by being struck through a foreign object. I would like the community's consensus on whether I am correct in my assessment, and what the item most probably was. Lastly, based on prior sales on ebay, it would seem that there is quite a premium for such an error. What would you think this is worth? TIA

Appears to be struck through a piece of thread.

BigSilver, it is a struck thru. and a nice One,any added premium due to this error it's usually determined by the buyer, all we can do is to list it and hope for the best.

Sure looks like string like rottnrog stated. Too bad it was on a proof coin. I always felt strike throughs on proofs detracted from their eye appeal.

Is there a reflective difference between the inside and outside of that"strikethru"? It does appear to be a fiber, but in pix reflects a two tone, signifying a wash spot.

@Crazyb0 I see what you are saying, but I dont think there is actually a reflective difference. That is clear in the full obverse picture. The close up was taken through the plastic of a capsule, because I was scared to get too close. That should account for what you are seeing.

100% is a strike through, value to be determined by someone who wants to buy, I certainly couldn't begin to guess at a price..i don't know how big the market is for such error coins..

Looks like string to me. I agree that on a proof coin, a strike through is a bit detracting unless it's purchased for the strike thru. I don't have any idea on the value.

I put it in ebay for $180 to see if there would be any interest. It insta-sold. Maybe I should have listed it for more?.....

Excellent Big Silver, even though for the most part we do have a good inclination on what a particular coin is worth or could sell for but you'll never know which way it go's till a collector of the sort sees it, good job
