Maybe, but could have been a flat head screwdriver after the strike....

Could be a struck through a rim burr but the edges looks a bit strange to me. 98% it's a rim burr though. John1

It could be PMD or a Struck Through. A test I do to know if it's a Struck Through or not is I shine the light on the area and if the mint luster goes through the area, then it's PMD. If the luster doesn't go through the area, then it's a Struck Through. I hope this helps you. :)

Quote: could have been a flat head screwdriver after the strike. No, screwdriver punch wouldn't follow the contour of the details. PS. What kind of light? Incandescent, florescent, LED?

Love when you guys present a condition and a hypotheses on how a mark on a coin happens. Good thing I just happen to have a wood working/machine shop in my back barn where I can try to produce the condition and most of the time prove it wrong. SO, not a screwdriver punch as the picture shows screwdriver heads are flat across, not tapered on the ends as then they would lose their torque and round the screw head - if you had a screwdriver that had worn ends please throw it away when you are done punching coins with it - I used a flat screwdriver with carpenters hammer on this zincoln Just one picture I can find of a few of my barn "toys" - love the Bridgeport the best though!!

Mark, any kind of light will do the job. Even your regular room light will do the trick. :)

"Thoughts on grade.... 1853 Large Cent" I've been taking pictures long enough with a crappy camera that I realize lighting is everything (trying to make gold from lead) - can't edit a washed out pic, or a dark pic.
