Going through 1963-D's looking for a submission to PCGS. I came across this monster today. It appears as a gigantic Cud that covers the face of President Lincoln. What is the term for this? It really is weird looking. People talk about a DDO with the eye lid. What is this? Your assistance would be Great! I have placed the Lincoln Penny in Acetone for fifteen minutes and rinsed with distilled water. The pictures at the end are of the result. Edited by Mint1 08/31/2017 8:46 pm

@mint1, I would give this coin a bath in acetone and re-assess what you have.

Quote: I just didn't want to dip it. If you use pure acetone, you shouldn't cause any damage to the coin. When people talk about "dipping" a coin, I think that they are referring to something which removes the surface layer of metal. Please someone correct me if I am wrong here.

Thanks for quoting me. Lol.... Maybe I misspoke? I have heard of it being called Dipping. I have never used acetone. I am awaiting the 15 minute soak. The I will use distilled water to rinse the penny off. Thanks for your help, it means a great deal. Seven minutes and no change yet.

It is not glue and it did not come off. The cheek bones are more pronounced than before. The copper is raised from the cheekbones around the eye all the way down to the jawbone.

Ok weird. From your pics, it sure looks like a clear glue or adhesive is stuck on his face.

Could it just be a bad carbon spot? Very strange indeed

I am sure it was carbon. A great deal of carbon or copper build up. I appreciate many of your responses very much.
