Hi all. I'm brand new to this site and to coin error hunting. I found this penny while looking through my change jar. Any thoughts on what happened to it and if it's worth anything? Thanks for any help in advance!   Edited by Jgb441

That is what's known as a plating bubble, a monster one in fact! What's happened istat the zinc core has been exposed to or or water and has deteriorated/corroded forming gas and dust under the thin copper plating. Notice the gray/white material on reverse opposite bubble on obverse. If you push hard on it it may pop like a zit would...wouldn't be surprised if coin has a hole clear thru! Can see others forming too.  to the forum! BTW,,,  Edited by Crazyb0

No, don't hold onto it. The Gas Bubble has form PMD on it making it worth 1 cent. Also, Gas Bubbles don't carry any extra value. Errers and Varietys.

My guess is the reverse took a blow from a BB or pellet at high speed. That split the plating on that side and started the zinc rot process (greenish funky gunk there).
That also created the bulge on the obverse under Lincoln's chin while not breaking but stretching the copper-plating on the obverse and prevented zinc-rot on that side.
