I've noticed that on all the $2 coins of mine that I examined, there are a number of dents into the rims of the coins. I seem to notice this more with $2 than other denominations. Also, there are many dents even in the coins I get from the RCM coin exchanges, which I assume are uncirculated. My question is, where do these dents come from, and how do they affect the grade (MS vs AU vs lower)?

Any way of posting pictures so we can see exactly what you are describing?

Here's a picture of a coin from circulation, notice the dents on the rim.

caused by the edge lettering when struck

If this is the case, would this have no effect on the grade? Or is it possible to obtain specimens without these dents?

I've seen it on many $2 coins. It's 100% from the edge lettering I believe.

It is referred to as a waffled rim. As mentioned, it has a connection to the edge lettering and has plagued Toonie quality for some time.

Quote: If this is the case, would this have no effect on the grade? Or is it possible to obtain specimens without these dents? Some are better than others, but since it is an as struck issue it should have a minimal impact on grading.
