Not the prettiest thing, but it's a nice upgrade from the ratty provincial I currently have, and it appears to have a nice reverse and a very clear -HOSTIL- in the legend.

Nice pick-ups! I'd like to see a close up pic of that one once you get it in hand.

Nice pick up!

Did you know it was Hostilian when you bought the lot, or did it come as a pleasant surprise?

Thanks all!

I periodically scout around on ebay to look for unattributed lots, in particular looking for the rarer emperors or types. When dealing in antoninianii, the young "boyish" portraits more often than not belong to Gordian III, but could also be Philip II, Herennius Etruscus, Hostilian, Valerian II, or Saloninus. Gordian III has a pointy witch nose more often than not, so his coins are often easy to distinguish, even if the legend is worn (most Gordians are in good shape anyway). In this case, I immediately spotted the HOSTIL in the legend, and knew I had to bid! I am honestly shocked I won this lot for a full £10 less than my max bid--and even that amount I figured wasn't enough to win me the lot.
