I've got a small collection of British coins, dating from 1696 to 1857. Someone in the past has mounted them on a card with glue and some of this is still stuck on the faces of some of the coins, which doesn't look too great.

I never look at them so it seems a bit pointless owning them really. But would anyone have suggestions (a) for cleaning them and (b) for mounting them in a frame (without glue!!) so that I can appreciate them a bit more?

Thanks.

to the CCF!
I would give them a good soak in acetone to dissolve any organic substances such as glue remainder, then buy a clear card board flip for each of them, according to their size.

I would also buy a coin album page, to keep them together.
The total cost would be around $5.

@arbu, first welcome to CCF. Second, I would echo @sel's advice, with the possible addition that depending on the type of glue, you might find that soaking in distilled water might be more effective if the acetone soak doesn't work. In the end, you will most likely find that the areas that were previously under the glue will be less toned than those that were left out exposed to the elements. You should resist the urge to strip off all the toning or polish these coins to make them uniform. Nice group of coins!

As far as I can tell they have already been polished. What with that AND the glue, I wouldn't bother. Sorry.

Thanks. I'll get some acetone. I do have some nail polish remover but from the label I see it has some extra chemicals which might not be too good for the coins.

I think they have been polished on the non-glue side. Still, they are of a good age and I would quite like to put them in a frame to have on the wall. I only just looked at them last night for the first time in probably ten years and it would be good to have them out more. The best thing would be a double-sided glass frame so that they could be taken off the wall and the other sides seen, but I don't really see much like that online.
