Is anyone using a dehumidified safe for storage of coins. I'm in Florida and keeping on top of it okay but such a safe would make life easier. I know they make these for guns and I doubt if the safe cares what's inside <g>. But, I wonder if they really work.
Thanks.

I'm sure they work fine, and people also use silica gel packs and similar devices that work fine too. As for using safes, I have found that unless the safe is very large or bolted to the floor, thieves just take the whole safe with them. I lost 2 safes that way, funny they weren't being used at the time and were empty. Thats why I don't use safes anymore. I have one in my house and it is filled with useless stuff as I figure that will be the first thing they grab since they won't have much time after the alarm goes off.

Valid point. I've thought about this too - if someone is holding a gun to your head or a loved one's head, are you not going to open it? I don't keep anything of real value at home, but I was thinking about how convenient it would be to do so. Thanks for making me think about it before buying a safe.

Hmm although I would have thought that scenario would be quite rare?!
On the other hand, I'd probably refuse out of spite?
Dumbass crooks ;)
We've banned guns from the UK in any case..

Banning guns just means the only ones who will have them is the crooks which is a scenario that would make me more nervous than a place where everyone had a gun

I'm not sure if that's true - after all, everyone can be a crook if they put their minds to it? Sounds like the argument that violence on TV does not increase violence in society...

Fellas........you don't need a "gun" to do a home robbery..........forget the focus on "banning guns". They could hold a "knife" to your wife or child's throat and say "open the safe"......or a screwdriver or sharp tool of any kind...... Criminals will still do crimes with "whatever" they can use.......guns are just high on the list is all and easier......... Someday maybe countries will ban "all sharp instruments" and guns.....maybe then it will cut down on violence and crime !...... Dang.....be pretty hard to cut my steak without a knife...... In some countries they cut your hand off for stealing an apple.......not because of the loss of the apple, but to make an example of the thief regardless of the level of his/her thievery......that is brutal.....but seems to work !...... How many people would commit a crime with a firearm if they lost their arm after getting caught ?......I'm not a proponent of that, but if more people realized that "prison" is actually a "better" life than a lot of criminals get on the street !....... air conditioning.....three square meals a day.......cable tv.......clean sheets and a bed.....but the crux of the matter......is the punishment isn't very "severe enough" nor is it very long......... even when they KILL somebody sadly so often !..5-7 years for murder and manslaughter..?...rape.. ?!!....I know people are outraged by criminals serving minimal time for these kinds of crimes...so what's the problem....politicians ?...overcrowding in prisons ?... should we do counseling for "DNA tested proven murderers"?...so...it's the justice system and the penalties that are the problem....... we've all heard of the term "repeat offender".......yes?.......continually letting people into society who "prey" upon society and have shown a consistent pattern for hurting their fellow man in various ways.......WELL.......THERE IS JUST NOT A PROPER DETERENT ! The idea of the freedom to defend myself, instead of becoming a victim is my choice in this country thank God !.........The cops can ONLY come to help you AFTER the crime has been committed...... and when you or a family member are dead because of someone else's actions who should have been in prison in the first place......... All I have to say to sum up is........ "Redneck Security in use on Property"......and if someone should ever want to test it.......God be with them ! You take your life in your hands when you decide to break into someone else's home.......mine is simply one of those homes ! And I'm glad and thankful to have the right to protect "me and mine".... Taking the guns out of citizens hands only leaves us at the mercy of the people who come to prey upon us ! The obvious drawback to having such a "free country" is that it can be a dangerous country.....therefore "stricter" consequences for certain actions MUST be enforced...(lopping off an arm ?.. )....but no one should take "my" freedoms and rights away or limit them or restrict them in any way because of the actions of vicious criminals preying on my community or my family. No one can protect you and your family but you.........police come to fill out reports AFTER the crime has been committed........they can't PREVENT crime before it happens......law abiding citizens should be able to protect themselves as they see fit. There will always be people who prey upon others.....it's just a fact of human history and human future....

I agree with some of what's been said before. A safe gives thieves a convenient target for their attention. This can be good - they walk off without finding the valuables, or bad - they happen to catch you at home. My preferences would be to keep all valuables out of sight, whether they're in a safe or not. Off site storage (safe deposit box) is probably the best but it's not convenient if you're actively working on part of your collection.
There is some maintenance involved with keeping the contents of a safe dehumidified. You'll need to recharge the desiccant (silica gel) or it will be useless. This will depend on how often you open your safe and how humid you air is. Some people will place their coin album, etc. in a Ziploc bag with the silica and try to get as much air out as possible. This is probably the best way to beat humidity. Check the packets every so often to make sure that they aren't saturated. Most come with a color based indicator.
If you decide not to go with a safe, you can also get a dehumidifier for the room you store your coins. You'll need to empty the water that accumulates every day (or plumb it into a drain).

.......no thoughts on the "gun debate" by our Moderator Bryan and NumisMatty ?........ I know it's a little off topic.....but not really...it's still in context there and belongs in a "to have a safe" or to "not have a safe" discussion and the dangers and benefits to owning one... Or........ .......maybe I shouldn't get on the forum after a 65 hour 7 day work week......on a Monday... and after only 4 hours of sleep !.... ... .... ...oops! WAS I JUST A TAD TOO LONG WINDED AND EXTREME 3 REPLIES UP ABOVE THERE?... ....

The Bill of Rights does not grant us our rights; they acknowledges the rights we all have from Natural Law. We are born with them and no person or government, can take them away.
We have the Natural Right to defend ourselves and our property, by any means necessary. The Second Amendment is a reminder of how the British seized the colonists' weapons to impede insurrection; a reminder that government should fear the people and not the other way around.
Now that has been said...
You have a right to protect your property any way you want, be it with an on premise safe or off-site safety deposit box. For a coin collector, protection is not only from theft, but from environmental damage as well.
High humidity can be a problem. IMHO, the easiest thing is to keep them in a building that is climate controlled. If not that is easy (maybe because you like to open up the house during the mild spring or fall), then extra steps need to be taken. All of the things that Patrick mentioned are good. Do not neglect the maintenance requirements; gel packs need to be recharged and dehumidifier reservoirs needs to be emptied.

It's a shame that more countries on Earth don't recognize this "Natural Law" !......(or that they DON'T temporarily "suspend" it or "lessen it/weaken it" at their convenience) Afgansistan....pre-Saddam Iraq......... wait.....I was about to name almost EVERY country on earth here that DOESN'T recognize "Natural Law".......WHEW !!....Thank God we're Americans !....

Don't you think it's much easier with a gun? Even a moron could kill you with one.. **shrugs** - nothing more to say about it really.. I don't want to get into a punch-up about it, but should you really be dancing and shouting exultations about your glorious country allowing the posession of handguns whilst other developed nations have a much lower rate. Wait, isn't the US the most developed nation on earth? These are the murders per 1,000 'heads' per year. Colombia 0.618 Jamaica 0.324 Russia 0.20 Mexico 0.13 Seychelles 0.074 (!?) Poland 0.056 US 0.043 per Finland 0.028 France 0.017 UK 0.014 Spain 0.012 Ireland 0.009 Japan 0.005 (! - they just commit hara-kiri) http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/c...s-per-capitahttp://www.data360.org/graph_group....Group_Id=441

.....with NumisMatty Yes it IS too easy !.......hence the debate in this country over it...take away guns....they'd do it with a knife or something else....or, more horrifying, only the "criminals" would then have guns !... Eaglefoot also **shrugs** and wanders off with nothing more to say either, but feels enlightened and appreciative of others opinions and deems that he enjoyed the discussion...

But eaglesfoot, it's like this, you have a nuclear bomb... are you happy with it?
Or would you prefer it if all people had to harm each other with was a club made from a tree branch?
