As I mentioned in a post earlier this week, I got to work at the coin shop this past week while I was laid off from my job as a Plasterer. I was more than happy to provide my services for the chance to study more coins , and learn anything I can along the way. Never disappointing , as shown by my other posts when I work there, this week was a really good one Numismatically- for me and for the shop .

Tuesday morning when I arrived there were about 25 people waiting outside...just when you think it's safe When I sat down at my usual seat I noticed there was someone else behind the counter...what's this you say ?!?! I heard mention in passing the Sat before about hiring someone, but I did not know they had someone already ! He was to help them buy the scrap gold and silver...whew ! Good for him, I am happy where I am !

Tuesday was nothing notable , I started looking through the Indian Head Cents- I was psyched about getting to look at lots of them. After Tuesday , I admit I was a little disappointed because I didn't find anything of note...but we must persevere ! Wednesday was another story, I posted the two RPD's (Re-Punched Date ) in the variety and error forum and vowed to get through the Snow book so I knew what to look for . It surely did light the fire, but nothing like the rest of the week did....

Thursday was a pretty good day for the Indians , I didn't find any doubled dies, but the RPD's were there, and I was finding them I will post the ones I got pics of in the appropriate forums, as I do I will edit to add the links here for your convenience (links will be at the bottom of the page as I get them on). It was alot of fun finding them and then seeing which one it was in the snow book...but even more fun was finding the RPD...and NOT finding it in the book - or the CPG. The Flying Eagle and Indian cent book they have is published 1992, so maybe there are updates...but I am going under the assumption right now that they are unlisted....A guy can dream right ? I will post them and see what the experts have to say. There were a few other small anomalies I found, planchet cracks, die chips, and strike throughs...all in all...not a futile effort !

On to other things...This post could get long..You have been forewarned

Thursday someone came in with a bunch of silver coin, I mean a bunch...I heard the machine going but I don't pay close attention to it..it is noisy and better to block it out when you can ! I think after I got a look at it it was about 700 dollars face dimes, halves and quarters. Later I found out that the coins were stored in a basement, in canvas bags...sounds good right ? well don't get too excited...they were mostly circulated...but they had been stored in a basement in an area that had high content of sulfur in the water...can you see where this might be going ? Yea..they are toned..., they must have been there for a looooong time , most of them went past purple and are headed for black...but...there were a few (and still are since we put those aside for a closer look) that were pretty...wow . Since they were mostly circ Walkers which do not traditionally tone well...it was a bit disappointing. We still have to look at some, maybe there will be a few nice ones..I'll let ya know. For now...Wanna see ? Here is a group of halves, notice that the closer to Uncirculated they are, the better they seem to fare against the sulphur (meaning the toning is nicer and lighter) but the well circulated coins seem to be much darker. I suppose coins could have been added..I assume they were all stored at the same time as a group.

Whoa huh ! How about a few more...A couple more halves, and others. The colors are a bit darker in all the pics, but they are close.

Some interesting colors there, they do look alot more purple than black when you turn them to the light, but by no means are most of these very attractive IMO, and I like toning. Speaking of toning, I also got my hands on a couple Morgan dollars that were stored in little blue envelopes and then in a plastic flip...much like Kraft envelopes, but blue...like this...

Thank-You-..may-I-Please-Have-Another-!-Last-Edit

The coins that were in those blue envelopes were...well...I will post them in the grading forum and link here...The pics do not do them justice, I will describe them there.

And then a guy walks in with about 40 -50 dollars face silver coins, I noticed they were all in a little box- and all stored in litlle brown kraft envelopes...Must be my lucky day right ? well, they also put the coins into those old crunchy plastic foldover holders before the envelopes..and they were pretty tightly sealed in there ...no toning at ALL on any coins in that bunch...but...looky what I got

Thank-You-..may-I-Please-Have-Another-!-Last-Edit

I think I am going to put a few coins in those and see what happens...anybody want a couple Kraft envelopes ?

OK...getting pretty long here..I will try wrap it up..no promises.

Then.....On Friday, I found a really cool coin. Since I do most of the over the counter sales while they buy all day, I get little breaks from looking at the IHC's and I try to look at some things here and there...This day I decided that since the last guy bought a 1999 proof set, I would look at all they had that day and see if I could find any Close AM cents in them. Can you guess what happened next ? You would be right ! I was floored, I had to do a double take and compare to another one before I was confident enough to announce my find...What a day, That was a very satisfying find for me. I have been touting the errors/varieties since I started voicing my opinions to them. Clyde has never been much of an error dealer, they do sell what they find, but he does not usually buy them (except for the biggies of course, as all dealers would) After I told him it could be well over 500 $ if it came back a 68 or better..they tend to look at things differently when larger sums of money are involved. I told them they better keep an eye on the 98's too...I will get to them next !

Oh yea..the new Guy...he quit after that one day..to stressful he said... Stressful ? If you say so ! Different strokes I guess ! I am waiting for the day that it feels like a job working there...I hope it never comes !

I am going to cut this short...yes there's more...so I can get a couple things up for your viewing pleasure . I have to go back to Plastering tomorrow..so I gotta hit the sack soon...Links shortly, If I have time this week I will try to finish up , if you're interested...keep your eyes peeled

First link is to the 2 Indian Head cents in the variety and error forum. I think these are unlisted...we'll see.

KurtS, I have not forgotten about you ! I am planning to go through the "sand" sometime in the next month and retrieve some more stones- they have your name on them ! Sorry..I will be posting the Close AM cent later...it is getting late . I wish I had time to get them all up tonight, there are some nice things to look at here !

Since KurtS asked so nice...Here's the Close AM tonight instead of later...

I know it's a long read..but it's gonna get longer. To avoid anyone having to search for the continuation and the posts related to this one, I will just edit them into this post...If anyone has a better way...please speak up !

First the questions raised later down the page.

deadmunny- The price they pay varies with the price of silver (I am sure you know that ) but on that particular day, I believe it was about 10.6 x Face. I have said this before in my posts...You will not get better money for your silver/gold anywhere in this city. Many of the smaller local jewelers sell to Clyde what they buy as scrap, so I know they don't pay near as much as Clyde does. He takes losses sometimes, but it comes with the territory.

The 1999-S Close AM proof cent is from a clad set, I don't know if the silver sets contain them or not. I did look through the silver sets (can't hurt) but didn't find another...I guess one a day is the limit ?

I did want to mention also that last week we had a young gentleman from Heritage Galleries come into the store. Apparently he has family in the area and is looking for a couple dealers to visit in the area when he visits them. He bought several slabs, mostly PCGS and mostly commems..to the tune of almost 3000 dollars. I am going to have to make note of what he gets next time and see what they get for them at Heritage...plus it will be cool to see our coins for sale there.

We also had a few customers last week that at first didn't seem strange..but then it did..then I got the explanation. A guy comes into a coin shop...he he..sorry no punchline ...He wants 4 circulated silver dollars..no biggie...I get him the box , he picks out his coins...thank you , have a nice day. Two guys walk into a coin store, they also want 4 silver dollars (each)...Hmmm.....thanks , have a nice day. Another guy walks in to a coin store...sheesh...guess what he wants...4 silver dollars...Now I gotta ask what the heck is going on ! Turns out there is some kind of magicians class or seminar that these guys are all going to that requires them to have 4 silver dollars...go figure. Sounds like an expensive class to me, those Morgans are 13.25 each ! The last guy that did that for they day was smart..he bought 40% Ikes for his silver dollars...he got away for less than half the others.

OK..you'vd suffered enough for now. Here are two links to an 1897 Morgan dollar and a 1904-O Morgan dollar in the grading forum. These are the two coins contained in the little blue envelopes up the page..they are really very nicely toned and IMO, super coins for the 63 money I paid for them both. Enjoy !

I will try and wrap this up tonight, the week is getting long and I have a big side job to do at night this week.

Just a couple more mentionable at the shop this week...We did have a few more buyers last week, as the metals dropped the buyers of bullion started buying again. The volume is still high , so much so that they have now hired Brinks to take the weekly run of scrap to the place they sell to. I think it's a good idea to get the security of that transfer out of your own hands as quickly as possible..I am sure his insurance company agrees.

I just have to mention a certain customer..I call him Grumpy Gus (His name is John ) I have never seen anyone complain so much about everything he looks at. Nothing we have is ever as nice as what he already has...Since I was looking at the IHC's last week, he just had to get in on it. I was sorting the cents to go in the $1.40 each bucket, or the F+ ones to sell , and fo course pulling any anomalies I found. Now, Grumpy Gus has an almost complete set of Indians, missing only a couple coins, and they keys are high grade coins...so I am wondering why he even wants to look at the common circs...but he does. He then proceeds to grumble about how beat up the coins are..this one's scratched...this ones really worn...this one looks cleaned...enough already !! It's funny to me, but a bit of a pain in the you know what since he can never make up his mind. I think he figured he could get the best ones in the box since no one else had been in them yet, but the best wasn't good enough for him ! I guess if he cracked a smile once maybe I wouldn't call him Grumpy anymore.

I have a couple more Indians to post in the Variety and Error Forum, one is a Re-Punched Date (RPD), one looks like it might be an RPD, and the other has a couple pretty large die chips..I hope I have some more interesting stuff to post next week, but it looks like I will only get to the shop on Saturday this week... You all have a great week !

Plaster man, thanks for the narrative -- keep 'em coming!
How much does that customer with sulfured silver coins get at your shop, if I may ask? 10 X face?

I wish I could work in a coin shop.

Have people found the Close AM in both types of proof sets(regular and silver)?

I don't know if this find is silver or a clad set, but I seem to recall people finding them in silver sets. The Close AM I found was broken out of a set.
