FVRIVS RVFVS Pillar of the Community United States 3443 Posts	Posted 09/16/2017 6:54 pm I had my eyes on a nice little bronze as of Caracalla earlier today. About 2 hours before the auction closed I found myself with some time to kill. I pulled up the iPhone and looked at my prize and decided to go long on it (DEA CAELESTIS) Having a few more minutes I examined the rest of the poorly photographed offerings. Decent coins but the start prices were a bit high for my tastes. I spied a rather crumby looking Sestertius ...... "Gordian III Sestertius" read the title Hmmmmm Strange looking ....... Uncleaned too ........ Long and short I out outbid another guy who had noticed it too ! 50 clams with shipping ! (up from 10 clams with 10 seconds to go) Only time will tell if I wasted fifty bucks but the description gives it 26.4 grams which tells me there might be a nice gem beneath all that encrustation. That and I can see two places where the underlying surface is showing through and it has some promise. Of course it isn't a Gordian III Sestertius ...... It is my first Roman Imperial of Macrinus After 42 years collecting I need to get moving on some of the empty spaces ! The weight gives me optimism. 26.4 grams is full weight do I believe it likely the coin is not corroded beneath the surface. But it may take a year to properly conserve it. I am a notorious cheapskate ! The seller is actually a larger sized 'peddler' of coins (France) although not of ancients He is probably still scratching his head why some dumb American would spend €40 on a crappy looking Sestertius of Gordian III The last time something like this happened to me I was staring at a "Gordian III" for a full two minutes while time expired until I recognized the letters AFR I was looking at a corroded Gordian II Sestertius ........ It sold for $9.99 On a still and quiet night you can still hear a faint echo rolling through the hills of central Massachusetts "Noooooooooooooooo .........." Report this Post to the Staff
