Hello. Thank you for adding me to the forum.

I live in a rural town in Bavaria and I have worked a field not far from what would have been the center of this village long ago (the town was founded 700 years ago.)

They bull-dozed up a section where they intend to put in a road and I took the opportunity (with permission) to metal detect. The cut was about 18 inches or roughly 1/2 meter deep.

I found several musket balls, buttons, and this odd item. It is very small, maybe 1/2 cm and very thin. The back of it has no markings. At first I thought it might be a face for a button - and indeed it could be - but with the odd design on the front I'm wondering if it might be a coin or token. You need a magnifying glass to even make anything out. It was found at what would be about 22 inches below the surface.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

The frame looks like Germanic design. The hatching on the bottom looks like Bavaria from some coins from the 1600s. (See KM 8 or 17 or 117.)

What I don't see in the catalog is Bavarian arms on the bottom half and blank (or something worn) on the top half.

Thank all of you for your comments.

It's interesting that you see something of a Bavarian coin because this was dug in Northern Bavaria - specifically in the Oberpfalz near Weiden.

I appreciate your feedback and the time you took to look at things. My expertise is more in the militaria line and I'm clueless on coins.

It astonishes me that they made coins so small. I can't see any details on it without a magnifying glass. I wonder how they managed to make them.

After some discussions with a friend of mine and a couple of locals, it appears I've stumbled on to some type of skirmish from the 30 Years War, meaning the coin would be appropriately dated in the 1600s. Going to search again tomorrow. Will keep you posted if more coins appear.
