Does anyone know how to tell what these are made of? Silver or Bronze? Weight?

I read somewhere that there is over an oz. of silver in these. Can that actually be true?

Yes. The British War Medal given to combat soldiers contains 1 troy ounce of silver; it weighs slightly more than that because it is made of sterling silver (.925 fine). The medals given to non-combatant auxiliaries - mainly Indian and Chinese labourers - were made of bronze.

Check along the edge, they are normally engraved with the name and unit of the guy it was awarded to.

Picked up one of these medals today - rim condition is poor but name is still visible.
