I've acquired several proof 1970 coins recently, and this one is in a set. I notice that the 'toning', if that's the right word, is uneven: the centre seems lighter than the rest. Is this common? What has caused it?
Thanks.

It was kept in a container of some type that touched the periphery but not the center of the coin.

It's still in the original plastic case with its siblings.

Surely it is just oxidisation where air has got to it (working from the outside inwards towards the centre.)

How do the others look? Is there a half penny there to compare, does this match the inside or the outside colour of the penny?

The half penny also shows a similar pattern but less obvious (smaller area of paler colour).

I think moisture/air has seeped in there then and oxidised it.

I've seen several 1970s UK proof coins like this in their original casing. The toning starts around the rim and gradually spreads towards the centre of the coin.
