Sent My 1978 D Ike In For A Cross, And PCGS Says It's Fake.

Though not at all into Ike dollars, this thread caught my eye. I'm always trying to learn more about our hobby, and thought I would look at the coin carefully. First of all, I don't have any problems with the toning. Toning of this type could easily have happened because the coin was resting for a period of time on something that would transfer to the coin, initiating these rainbow colours. I think they are natural. I've seen other examples like this.

As for the coins authenticity, I went to PCGS coin facts, and pulled up a photo of the coin in question, and compared both coins carefully. My first impression was that your coin is softly struck, and that the Ike's hair detail and the eagles breast feathers are very poorly defined. I also looked at the details on the reverse "craters", and found inconsistencies in them. A couple of features on the crater walls are missing, or in the wrong location. This could be because of weak striking, or the fact that the die was nearing the end of its usefulness.

Again, I consider myself a novice coin collector, and my opinion hold water about as well as a bucket with a hole in it. But you might wish to do a side by side detailed comparison of your coin, and several known graded examples with photoss. I find PCGS a great place when I need photos. I would also query the grading service you used, and ask exactly what part of the coin is obviously outstandingly counterfeit. In other words, which part of the coin sent up a red flag that gave it that concensus. Best wishes

Then PCGS should not have said counterfeit. They should have given a grading detail, with the note retoned. Retoning a coin does not mean counterfeit. It just means the surface has been chemically altered. Look on ebay, and Google for toned coins. You will see a few examples of toning just like what you see on your coin. I still do not see a problem with the colouration. The only reason someone would retone a coin is to increase its value, simply because there is such a strong market for wonderfully toned coins. Premiums can bring three times the asking price of an untoned coin in the same grade, and the skies the limit for some of the absolutely outstanding toned coin examples.

If the coin is the one I believe it is didn't ANACS call it a 67? If it's that one I think the tone is fine and they just didn't feel it it was a 67. They only have 3 67s currently and at least one of them has sold for 7k before




They generally don't on crossovers. If you are requesting them to cross at grade you are really just asking them a Yes/No question. Does this coin meet your standards for the grade: yes put it in a PCGS slab, no send it back in the original holder.

Everyone's just kind of guessing why it didn't cross. I'm pretty sure they just didn't think it was a 67 if it's the coin I think it is
