Greetings from Victoria BC.
In early 1904 (L'an 12) French coinage featured Napoleon as 1st Consul. In May that year, he became emperor and the coinage changed to show that. Thus in L'AN 12 there were two types of quarter-franc. This example is from the consular period and was minted in Bayonne. When grading books, age is taken into account, but I suspect that is not so with coins. Coins of this issue shown on the net is this condition are described as VF, which seems an exaggeration. The scans show the coin at double the actual size. I would be grateful for advice as to the grade.

The French coins of this era were all heavily circulated.
Conversely, I think that if you are lucky enough to have one in EF or better condition, then you have a rare coin.
This coin in perhaps G condition. Nevertheless, very collectible.

If shown on the Net as VF for this coin then you are right in expressing the view that the grade is exaggerated.

You are also right: age is not taken into account, when grading coins.

I hope that you mean 1804?

Anyway, for the grade, I think VG+ would be more applicable. Maybe a weak F but then I have to see the coin in hand (these aren't the best pics in the world). It's better than G, but certainly not VF.

I'd call it B10. eFranc values it at 90 euros.

I think this looks much lower than VF—I would be at VG-8.
