I have 2 mint sets, A 1961P 5 coin. And a 1964D 5 coin. I just noticed that there are a few small holes/ cracks In the cellos of both sets that are beginning to affect the coins. I don't know what to do! My first thought was to put each set in a separate zip loc bag with some absorbing gel packs and seal them. Other than that I really need the experts advice! I just realized that I have posted this in the wrong forum. My apologies!

Hey Toots!
Best thing is now remove them and use round coinsafe plastic protector, those are safe, no PVC. Baggies may have some. When migrating, only thing you can do is give 'em a bath, in pure acetone, rinse w/distilled water(not tap), tap dry (don't rub) then into the keepers. Touch the edges only!
Other media options are the 5-coin plastic cases, from cheap $.50 ones to $7.50 Capital Plastics holders.

Thank you for the advice Crazyb0! Do you recommend a seller or web site for the holders? Or is as easy as Capital Plastics.com? Never mind! It is as easy as that! Thanks again Crazyb0!

The ziplocks and absorbing gel should do the trick (No PVC in bags intended to use holding food), but unless you have the other half of the sets why bother? A mint set has a value AS A SET, A partial set usually has no real value over the value of the individual coins which is typically face value or close to it.

Conder101, when you say "other half of the sets" are you referring to both P&D mints of each year? For a total of 10 coins per set

I believe that is what he means.
Personally, I would remove the coins from the OGP material and put into individual 2x2 holders.

Yes, a mint set is made up of two sleeves of coins, one from Philadelphia and one from Denver. In the OP only one "sleeve" from each years was mentioned ie: two half sets. Hence my comment about whether you had the other half of the sets. (The 1961 Philadelphia set COULD be a proof set though, that just has a single "sleeve" of coins. If it is a proof set it will have an embossed foil "medallion" that says US MINT PHILADELPHIA. The mint sets in those years uses a round gray plastic disk that identified the mint.)

Both have the plastic disk. My grandfather passed in 1979 and his collection went to my mother who passed in Febuary and I now have it. I know the 64 was bought for me as it is my birth year but I don't know why he had the 61 or why he didn't purchase the "Whole set" of each. Non the less I have been having a lot of fun going through this collection. There are a lot of books missing coins and once I have documented what is here and what is needed to complete them I may post a want/need list. Mean while I just ordered plastic snap loc holders for the 61 & 64 mints coins. It seems to me that these coins individually may be worth more if they are graded MS as opposed to only 5 coins from a 10 coin set. Thank you for you advice and helpful information!! jbuck, thank you as well! As I stated above, I ordered snap loc holders for the coins. Not only is it the most logical way to preserve them, it also gives me the opportunity to take a closer look at them! White cotton gloves on of course.

Unless they grade REALLY high, it would cost more to have them graded than they will be worth after grading. I did make one mistake earlier when I said only worth face value. I neglected to consider the dime quarter and half in each set as being silver. They would be worth the melt value not face value.
