Just found out I won the following Elymaean drachm in a German auction. Didn't have this guy in the collection and so am very pleased, especially given the VF obverse condition (pretty exceptional for the type, actually, despite the weak reverse) and the decent hammer price. In fact I had lowballed and then forgotten about my bid, since I didn't hold out any hope. What a neat surprise to receive the email confirmation of my win today. Prince B (we don't know his name) is the next to last ruler of Elymais, according to Pieter van't Haaff's chronology. This is another one for my Parthian-inspired tripartite hairstyle subcollection! Look at the size of the hairballs the cat coughed up here! (I can only imagine how very much better that cat must be feeling now) Auction house's pic below. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that the coin successfully traverses the pond and East Coast on its way to the American Midwest. Prince B, Elymais AE drachm, 12 mm, 2.49 gm. 3rd Century AD Obv: Diademed bust left, wearing tiara, anchor off flan to right? Rev: Athena standing right, holding spear and shield set on ground Van't Haaff 20.1.1-1A (possibly a variant with no achor) Edited by Kamnaskires 09/24/2017 5:45 pm

BobL, that's a really good blog of Orfew's, will be going in my fledgling resource file thanks to both of you. Just bought some of Finn's coins to "get my feet wet". Have had the itch to expand a bit, just not sure exactly what so have a wide spread coming, hope to decide by a "in hand" look over. Seem to be drawn to pre-1700's coins, but then, early Roman period is quite intriguing also...? So you'll probably see me here a bit more asking very basic noob questions, than just lurking. Love the backstories, histories of the different era's.

Wow! super coin Bob with a beautiful obverse great detail! I love the way the green patina helps to highlight the high spots making the head really zing out! Quote: Van't Haaff 20.1.1-1A (possibly a variant with no achor) Could be a bonus eh? Congrats saludos Paul

Cool pickup, love the portrait and the general style of these.
I wonder how complete your collection must be by now... are you missing many? How many different types are there to collect and how many have you go so far?
