I thought I was almost finished with the series but I saw my new Charlton had 3 more varieties! Having said that I am having trouble determining if this is the round or pointed variety. The photo in the book wasn't the most clear. If it helps this is from a proof-like/uncirculated set.

If you do a search in the Coin Forums you will find an excellent picture.... try '1979 pointed' as your search arguement.

That's the rounded bust. It's identical to the 1982 bust varieties. Another way to look at it is at the relief: rounded bust has high relief, pointed bust is low relief.

That is the "Round Bust".
Both varieties are available in business and Proof-Like strikes.

I'm looking in my 2013 Charlton and it shows only one type for 1979, have they made changes since that issue?

Thanks for all the info! My 2015 Charlton doesn't show it either but the new 2018 edition I got today does. It's also not in the 2016 Haxby. Further the new Charlton shows the 1974 missing S and the 1958 dot.

I just got the pointed bust in a PL set I bought on ebay. Haven't taken it out of the set yet.
