What does it mean when a note is a specimen?

And when purchasing one, is the word "specimen" stamped on the note?

Thanks,

G'day, "specimen" means for display or training purposes: no monetary value. Of course we collectors love 'em, and pay even more, because they're worth less ...

There are a lot of speciuems of the earliest Oz decimal notes $1 to $20, from 1966. I suppose the banks used them to familiarize staff.

Speciems are marked as such in several ways: commonly with the word "SPECIMEN" writ large on both sides; usually in red. Renniks 2007 lists five types.
