The obverse as you can see has a woody-like appearance, but that shouldn't be, as these were pure copper. Any idea why it has the look of a woody?

Is it worth sending in? Maybe to ANACS especially if you can submit it at a show to save on shipping. But even then I'd think it would be questionable.

I sent it in on the insider special (15/$129 with free return shipping). Ended up sending in 25 coins, and I think this was the lowest in value. At a cost of $8.60 for the submission, it was worth it.

Even though cents of this era were "100% copper", how pure was the copper? Could there have been impurities that would cause the striations?

Correct, in THEORY they were pure copper, but with the refining capabilities of the time, and the possiblity of potentially some recycling of the copper, the copper my have had some impurities. I know that tests run on some of the early large cents that were suppose to be pure copper showed significant contamination.
And at that cost for the slabbing you can't really get hurt.
