Howdy, I am new to the forum. I pulled out my coin collection from my childhood. I remembered I had a quarter that was copper on one side. I wanted to share some photos and get everyone's thoughts. How do you value errors? I don't know much about them.

Looks like the right color. A closer view of the reverse would help us determine if the clad was missing pre/post strike.

This error if legit would be called a Missing Clad Layer error.

This is a real loss of plating strike, lost pre strike. Because there is a slight thinner planchet (less weight), there is a slight sign of weak struck on some design elements, full downward pressure didn't reach the whole coin. (Note QUARTER DOLLAR) I see this same weakness on IGWT and date of your coin. This means plating was gone before striking. BTW, weakness on CuNi is because copper is a softer metal and will flow easier into the die metal devices. Your coin is a genuine mint error and is worth some money. Preserve it nicely!

Looks like a pre strike layer of the clad. Nice find. On the ones that peel off after the strike the devices are not as strong.

It looks legit to me and thanks for the edge pic.

Excellent (re)find!

The best way for me is to search ebay for the error and check SOLD listings. Some nice examples like yours have sold for over $60 raw. Some graded ones were over $100. I personally would not send it for grading if I planned on selling it.

Congratulations on a truly wonderful find. I would suggest NGC or PCGS encapsulation to maximize value.

WADR, I would not. The cost of slabbing would out weight the retail return. As a general rule a coin need to have a retail value of at least $200 to justify all of the costs involved in having it TPGed,IMHO.

You're welcome. Now you need to put this in a flip case as soon as you can.
