Picked up this 3c last week. There's a bit of rim damage, but the details are pretty good, and there's even a nice clash too!

unc details rim damage, scratches. shame as it is very pretty.

The rim damage will always keep it in details land, which I'm sure you knew when you bought it. Hopefully at a reduced price.
For grade, it's a decent AU, with the typical striking problems. If you search for another of these try to find one WITHOUT die problems such as cracks and clashes as that will usually indicate an earlier die and nicer looking elements. Especially for the type I's, it's harder to find no problem die strikes.

I agree with IGE on the rim issue being a potential planchet defect. It's hard to tell and to be honest it doesn't bother me. Enjoy your coin!

I won't speak for IGE but I'll explain my reasoning...if you look on the obverse you'll see a nice little chunk taken out of the edge. It's not a bump or dent but some missing metal. However, if you look at the corresponding area on the reverse there is still metal there, albeit, not fully struck at the rim. So it looks to me that the planchet was defective when it went through the press and did not get fully struck on that area on the reverse. I guess something like a vise or pliers could have squeezed that rim but I would think the damage and missing metal would be similar on both sides of the coin not predominantly on one side like it is on the obverse. I don't know. I need to see it and inspect it by hand but that's what I was thinking.
