I've been given an old collection that hasn't been looked at in close to 70 years. Trying to learn what my grandfather left me and was wondering if this is the best group to learn. I'd like to sell some that I have many of, but also buy and build the collection. I bought a Red Book today and if this is not the right forum for me can someone please direct me to the best place to learn. Thank you

Buying a Red Book and stopping by this site are two first great steps. Please share a description of what you've inherited and photos of any items with questions, you'll be amazed how quickly they are evaluated.

to CCF. You have indeed joined the best. Red Book is good for info but not prices. Look here and ebay sold values http://www.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices/fmv.shtmlYou can not buy/sell/trade here until you have more posts, please read the B/S/T rules. Post your questions and photos in the proper sections of our forum. John1

Although it's easy to miss the correct topic until you've acclimated to the site, the mods are very pleasant and will help you if it's in the wrong place. The Red Book is a great start but the prices are considered to be very high. Show us photos with your questions and it would be rare if you didn't get great help.

to CCF! The Red Book will teach you tons about the coins, but be aware the prices are /a/ high retail and /b/ out of date by the time the book is published. But it will give you good general info as to which years are common and which are rare.

Hi and welcome. My grandfather left me stuff, too. Well, actually he left it to his kids- my father- and then, it filtered to me. But I was already a collector. I liked RedBook, too, although I found it a little dry reading. I had more fun learning and buying/selling using the magazine, Coin Prices, and the newspaper, Numismatic News. Don't even know if those pubs are still active. A book I would definitely recommend is Photograde, by James Ruddy. The author used to attend shows, too. The book is easy to use and can be had cheaply (I just book another copy). It is really valuable for telling a G from a VF, etc. You will need this knowledge if you inherited a lot of loose, raw coins. Don't let other people or dealers try to bully you into selling below the grade. I know, it's happened to me.
