amber, if you are referring to the back of Abe, those look like Die Chips.

They most likely are die chips,But could be a gouge,Looks to linear if that makes any sense!

Sorry all. No chip and dip this time. It is old worn down damage, Newbie saw it, it was a hit from the NW that piled metal up, and then worn smooth... PMD

It is like the piling of snow when it is pushed. Note the areas to the NW? They are flattened and there is where the metal that moved upward is now. Looks like some has fallen off the coin already. PSD as Crazyb0 mentioned.
