Hi all, have had this cent for a long time and never asked what that thing above the tail feathers is. It is raised and looks like it would be a part of the coin but not sure. Thoughts on it and a grade? Thanks!

It might be a die chip, but I'm thinking the metal was piled up from left to right.

Couldn't enlarge enough to see for sure.

without being able to see a hit on your coin in the picture it may be just a die chip as stated above.

Yeah it definitely isn't a hit on it. Is a die chip a common enough error that it would add anything to the value or not so? More of a "oh that's cool" sort of thing? Thanks!

Could we have a close-up of the chip and the area to the left including that darkish patch, please?
Rest in Peace

A die chip would be a lot better than a big gouge, but we can't see it well enough to tell.

Here is the best I can do not very clear at all but that blackness doesn't seem like any hit on the coin.

Seems to be a die chip. I've seen alot of copper coins that have chips like those just out in the fields with nothing around them to tell how it happened.

Cool. A nice little "quirk" on my FE cent. Seems to be more of just a "wow" thing rather than a valuable error then too. Thank you very much for your help!

If it were gouged out by an impact and then re-flattened somewhat by circulation, while a little dirt filled in the periphery, it'd come out looking just like this as well. As popular as these are, and as closely as these have been studied, I should think that a die chip visible to the naked eye in the middle of a field would likely have been recorded previously. This is no guarantee that it isn't a die chip, but to my mind the possibility is less than that of a worn postmint hit.
