Just bought this ugly coin of Stephen of England. His coins are notorious for being ugly and poorly struck and for irregular flans. Yes, all three are true of my coin. If you look carefully you will be able to see the outlines of a crude right facing portrait on the obverse.

Why did I buy it? I like hammered coins. Yes they are expensive, yes they are fragile. However, they do tell tell important stories. This one was struck during "The anarchy" when Stephen and Maude were contending for the crown in a civil war. Such a tumultuous time meant that the coins did not get the proper attention and the result is a coin like you see below.

Stephen (c.1136-1145AD) Spink 1278, BMC I - Cross Moline Type, Some clear detail with a patchy tone, some edge damage. (HHC4387) Norman Silver Coin

Interesting coin but that ugly ducking is never going to be a beautiful swan for me ^^

If what you declare is true it is the perfect example of his coinage though :)

Congrats, a monarch that I have barely heard of and certainly have never seen an example of.

The fascination for me is not just having the coin, but the history behind it. Recently I posted several threads on Judean Prutah some of which were very ugly coins. The condition of the coins didn't matter all that much, what matter was the historical story they told. Congats on an interesting coin.

There was the insanely nice example that billjones posted in 2016, but apparently now it's just yet another "please upgrade your account to view this" banner.
