Is This A Greek Colonial Coin Of Italy

Michael367 Valued Member Canada 51 Posts	Posted 10/02/2017 2:43 pm Good morning, this coin looks like it is from a latish Greek period with a diademed head and a boy on a horse. My guess would be southern Italy. It weighs 5 grams and measures 19.5 mm in diameter. It seems to be made of brass but with corrosion spots, I would suspect it is a brass alloy worth ten bucks at best. Kamnaskires Pillar of the Community United States 7066 Posts	Posted 10/02/2017 9:59 pm Definitely Campania, laureate (not diademed) Apollo obverse, man-headed bull reverse. Hard to make out the symbol above the bull, but I believe it's probably a lyre/kithara rather than the Nike type that is more common. Michael367 Valued Member Canada 51 Posts	Posted 10/03/2017 5:58 pm Thank you, Bob L, what an incredible site this is. So starting from the ID as an AE18 didrachm of CALES. The exergue should, I assume, bear the city name CALENO. On my coin, the only clear letter is a BACKWARD N nu , perhaps followed by an I iota and just possibly a lambda.. The obverse perhaps contains the same backward N and a series of scratches that are reminiscent of forgeries I have seen. Have you any comment on the lettering or a suggestion as to where I might go to learn more? I would like to track this down further. Mt grandfather's notes say he "kicked it up" in the desert west of Dmascua -- both he and the coin a long way from home. So very many thanks for putting me on the trail.
